Full-spectrum hemp extract chemistry studies at Colorado State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences with Charlotte’s Webs CW Labs
Multi-phase research project promotes scientific data on how genetics, growth conditions and extraction types affect the phytochemical profile of hemp extract

The Company’s CW Labs science division and Colorado State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences (CSU) conducted the first of three collaborative hemp metabolomic studies exploring the complex chemical profile of full-spectrum hemp extracts made in the United States The company’s patented hemp strains have been completed, and the collaboration will investigate cannabinoid profiles in hemp extracts under various strains and conditions.
Specifically, the studies examine the extent to which environmental conditions, geographical regions, harvest times and different extraction methods can influence the resulting phytochemical profile of the hemp plant and the subsequent botanical extracts. In Phase I of the investigation, it was explicitly analyzed how processing and extraction protocols for the hemp harvest can be standardized for a consistent chemical profile.
Under the supervision of Dr. Jessica Prenni, Associate Professor in the Department of Horticulture at the CSU, the PhD student Janina Bowen researched the company’s own hemp extracts in the Prenni Laboratory of the College of Agricultural Sciences.

In the long term, the study data uncovered as a result of this academic research will provide a deeper understanding of the spectrum of ingredients in full spectrum hemp extract and an understanding of what factors can affect that profile. The information is intended to serve as a guide for optimizing phytochemical fingerprints and to help improve agricultural and extraction methods and further standardize processes, procedures, test methods and controls for consistency and reproducibility.
Phase I of this scientific collaboration has been going on for more than two years and the research is formally reviewed and published.
About Dr. Prenni
Dr. Jessica Prenni received her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Colorado, Boulder, followed by postdoctoral training at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA. She has over 18 years experience in biological mass spectrometry and served over ten years as the director of the Proteomics and Metabolomics Core Facility at Colorado State University (CSU). During this time, her group developed novel approaches in metabolomics for analytical methods and data analysis, including the RAMClustR algorithm (developed by Dr. Corey Broeckling) for clustering and annotating metabolites. Currently, Dr. Prenni Associate Professor at the Institute for Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at the CSU University of Agricultural Sciences, where the overarching topic of her research is the application of mass spectrometry to address important food / crop safety and quality issues. The Prenni Laboratory’s main research topics include: (1) non-targeted and targeted metabolite profiling of plant tissue and exudates to dissect complex genotype-by-environment (G x E) interactions, including the microbiome. (2) Development of new approaches with ambient ionization to characterize food quality and authenticity. (3) Sensitive and rapid quantification of drug and chemical residues in food. (4) Development of new methods for sample preparation, data acquisition and informatics in metabolomics.
