‘Buzz’-ing: More growth for the local cannabis market; Gold medal beer
Happy friday! The old Orchard Supply Hardware Store has a new tenant and Fall River Brewing is bringing the gold back home. It’s in the “buzz” this week.
Redding Record Searchlight
As GrowGeneration Corp. Bought The Harvest Company’s Redding and Hayfork businesses earlier this year, Harvest Company founder Robert “Bear” Masterson said bigger things were coming.
In fact, GrowGeneration’s Redding location is moving to the old Orchard Supply Hardware Store north of its current home on Athens Avenue. It is a building that is ten times larger in terms of floor space and storage space.
Gheen Builders of Redding is working to get GrowGeneration’s new home ready.
Alex Price, GrowGeneration’s Northwest Regional Manager, said they are expected to move in early 2022.
“We’re just excited to have a wider range of garden accessories,” Price told me recently.
GrowGeneration will go from a 4,400 square foot building to a 44,000 square foot building.
Much of GrowGeneration’s growth can be attributed to the country’s growing marijuana industry, particularly in California.
When GrowGeneration bought The Harvest Company last spring, the number of GrowGeneration locations increased to 55 in the US, including 20 in California. Today the company has 62 locations in 13 states.
TIED TOGETHER: How Redding’s growing cannabis economy continues to thrive
“It explodes. Redding is an emerging market and there are 500 cultivation licenses in Trinity County alone. So that’s a sleeping giant over the hill, “Masterson said at the time.
GrownGeneration Corp. recently reported record third quarter earnings as the company’s revenue rose 111% to $ 116 million for the quarter, compared to $ 55 million for the same three months in 2020.
And the company continues to buy independent garden centers.
Last summer, GrowGeneration acquired garden centers in Mendocino, Santa Clarita; Eugene and Ashland, Oregon; and Bellingham, Washington.
In April, GrowGeneration partnered with Belushi Farms, Oregon, founded by actor Jim Belushi, whose business grows medicinal and recreational cannabis.
Belushi said in a press release announcing the partnership, “GrowGeneration is joining us and building this incredible greenhouse system that will almost double our yield. I didn’t know this was possible until they got through! They are a hot crew and we worked together to make the plants dance like the Blues Brothers. “
As Manager of GrowGeneration’s Northwest Region, Price oversees the company’s operations in Concord, Cotati, Arcata and Santa Rosa alongside Redding and Hayfork.
Meanwhile, Orchard Supply Hardware in Redding was closed in early 2019. The store opened there in May 1994, replacing the Builders Emporium.
The loss of Orchard was a blow to the center on Athens Avenue.
But with GrowGeneration, the center has another anchor tenant.
New fitness room in the former Trends Vintage area
Jeremy Johnson has worked in the fitness industry including CrossFit, kickboxing, martial arts, and aerial acrobatics for nearly 25 years.
“I’ve learned that I can do anything I want, I have to have 10 different memberships,” Johnson recently told me.
So, 43-year-old Johnson has always wanted to open a gym that offers a variety of fitness services and classes.
Enter Rebel Fit Co.
Johnson has begun converting the former Trends Vintage Marketplace in the Cypress Square shopping mall into its new gym.
He hopes to have a grand opening in early January.
Johnson, who was born and raised on Hawaii’s Big Island, said he looked around Redding for the ideal location before settling on Cypress Square.
“We really wanted to become a different health-focused joint venture and we love Orchard Nutrition. It’s one of our favorite stores. We share a lot of customers and values so it’s really a home run for us to be next to them, ”said Johnson.
Rebel Fit Co. will be a fitness club for all ages.
One of the first things Johnson says is to offer gymnastics, martial arts, and aerial acrobatics classes for kids.
Adult lessons include kickboxing and jujitsu, among others. The gym will also have weights and dumbbell machines.
“We’ll also be offering pole fitness, adult boxing classes, and group fitness classes,” he said.
Johnson said the plan is to open at 5:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday. The club is closed on Sunday.
“We’re grinding right now (to open up),” said Johnson. “We’re building a sauna, remodeling the baths and painting.”
Fall River Brewing wins gold
Like the IPA craze that began a few years ago, sour beers are growing in popularity and breweries are taking notice.
Recently, Redding’s own Fall River Brewing Co.’s Sherbet Drip won the gold medal in the Fruited American Sour Ale category at the Great American Beer Festival 2021.
The competition, hosted by the Brewers Association, comprised 97 beer categories with 175 styles. The awards ceremony took place in September at the Bellco Theater in Denver during the Craft Brewers Conference.
Fall River describes its Sherbet Drip as the classic taste of rainbow sorbet with raspberry, sweet cara-cara orange and key lime additions.
The Redding Brewery celebrates its victory at a special release party this Saturday at 4001 Eastside Road Brewery.
There will be music and food from Anthony’s Mediterranean Grill. Doors open at noon with music from 5 p.m.
