New restaurant Umai Kitchen brings the flavours of Japan to the CBD • Glam Adelaide

Umai is the Japanese word for delicious. That couldn’t be more applicable to Union Street’s newest arrival.

New restaurant Umai Kitchen is introducing Adelaide to some of Japan’s most beloved dishes.

Although the restaurant is tucked away on the East End, we wondered what would come out of the vacant space. Umai Kitchen was the result of our curiosities.

Friends Han and Jay had plans to open their very own restaurant way back when. With Han taking the reins in the kitchen and Jay performing managerial duties, the pair have premiered their first-ever restaurant last week.

The two have known each other for years now. They had previously been based in Sydney before the saga that was COVID-19. Jay was after a sea change, and Adelaide was the result of that change. Han soon followed, and the vision for Umai soon came into focus.

“The first week was slow going but now it’s started to pick up which is nice,” Jay said.

With this being their first soiree into the restauranteering industry, the pair have seemed to take it in stride.

“We got to a point where we became more confident with our food and offerings that we knew we were ready to open this restaurant,” Han said.

What once was Hidden Brew Taphouse, is now a hub of Japanese cuisine bundled next to Ebenezer Place.

“We have changed a lot of things from the previous place, we’ve put new lights, new furniture and new designs on the walls. But we will improve design concepts with a more Japanese style once we get properly settled,” Jay said.

Seemingly opening under the radar, the offerings and atmosphere is anything but understated.

Some of our favorites are the Beef Tataki, Salmon Carpaccio, Nasu Dengaku, Vege Tempura, Teriyaki Chicken and the Miso Salmon.

“We just hope that people walk out of our restaurant happy and satisfied with what they’ve experienced,” Han and Jay said.

Even though the restaurant has only been open for a week or so, the pair envisions a bright future for Umai with the hope of expansion one day.

So why not show this newcomer some love?
