WEST SPRINGFIELD — A Town Council vote on the controversial proposal to allow retail marijuana establishments in town has been postponed to July 18.
Residents speaking at a public hearing Tuesday overwhelmingly demanded the issue be decided at the ballot box to see if public opinion has really changed since a majority of townspeople voted against legalization in 2016.
Speakers expressed concerns about health and safety of children, marijuana’s risk as a “gateway” drug and impaired drivers, in addition to the image cannabis would bring to the town.
